Tips and Guidelines for Composing Sympathy Words and Sayings

The most important thing to keep in mind when composing sympathy words and sayings is to speak fully from the heart. Remember to write what you're feeling, and keep in mind your social graces.

  1. Express your sorrow towards their loss. The whole idea of, Condolences, and, Sympathy Words,  is to let the Bereaved Person know that someone else is sharing their sorrow for the loss of their loved one.
  2. Keep your message short and thoughtful. With recognition of their loss and it is always a nice gesture to offer your help and support.
  3. Make sure you mention the deceased person's name. Thus making  your, Sympathy Words, and, Condolences,  more personal, and emphasizes the deceased's humanity.
  4. Share a good memory if you have one. If you remember an uplifting or humorous quality of the deceased mention it briefly. People enjoy hearing inspiring or funny things about their lost loved one.
  5. Sign the card using your full name. It's good to use your complete name. in case another friend or family member shares your given name. This way the bereaved will know exactly who it came from, and makes it easier to thank you when the time comes.

What NOT to say in your Sympathy Message

There are also certain things you should not mention when composing sympathy
words and sayings. They are:
  1. Never mention any past disagreements or other personal issues the bereaved and deceased may have had with one another.
  2. Do not bring any personal religious beliefs along with you.
  3. Careful not to mention any monetary issues, whether offering financial help or regarding monies you may have been owed by the deceased or bereaved. This is the wrong place in time to do so.
  4. Steer clear of clichés such as; "they are better off now", or "I know how you feel".
