The Puli (Pulik) is an ancient breed that crossed the plains into Hungary with the Magyar Tribe some several thousands of years ago when they were used as a sheep herding dog. Many shepherds had a preference to the black Puli. This was probably due to the fact that they were easier to see among the flock, plus it is a known fact that stock seem to take notice of the darker colored dogs. The Puli was the herding and droving dog, prized for its light, agile movement while the larger Hungarian breed, the Komondor, was more often used as a guarding dog for the flocks. Around the time of the second world war, the Puli breed had neared extinction when its numbers were reduced to two figures. But in a controlled breeding program assisted by dedicated Puli breeders around the world ensured the survival of this unique Hungarian dog.
