The Havanese originated form Havana, Cuba some time during the 1700s. The Havanese resulted from a now extinct breed known as Bichon Tenerife. These dogs were introduced to Cuba from Spain. They were once known as the Havana Silk Dog and the Spanish Silk Poodle. Some historical references tell us that Havanese may at one time used for herding chickens, ducks and geese in Cuba. Though this reference does seem to contradict information found in history books, indicating that the Havanese was once, the pampered pet of wealthy upper class Aristocrats. The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba. They are the country’s only native breed. At some point, the Havanese were almost extinct, but with dedicated breeding from devotees of the breed, they are presently on the rise in numbers and popularity.
