• Breed Origin: Peru - Inca Indians valued the hairless hounds more then the coated born in the same litters. Examples of 2,000 year old Mochica pottery show these dogs dressed in clothing, a testament to the high esteem in which they were held. These hairless dogs were kept by Pre-Inca Cultures in their houses as pets and bed warmers and were not allowed to mix with the coated dogs that lived with the indigenous Indians. At sundown, the coated dogs were locked up, and the hairless dogs were said to be taken out and allowed to exercise. This was because a fair skinned hairless hound would sunburn in the daytime due to the lack of a protective coat. The Peruvian Inca Orchid was accepted into the Foundation Stock Services program on the AKC in 1996.

• Coat Colors: The skin colors of these dogs is chocolate-brown, elephant gray, copper, or mottled combinations.

• Description: Peruvian Inca Orchid or PIOs are of slight build, medium sized dog that usually weighs between 20 to 25 pounds and stand 10 to 16 inches at the withers. They have a distinct lack of coat and some Peruvian Inca Orchids may have a mo-hawk of hair between the ears.
  

• Exercise Requirements: These dogs have modest exercise requirements and a daily walk will be sufficient.

• Grooming: The Peruvian Inca Orchid needs no grooming, but care must be taken with this dog in extreme temperatures. The PIO sunburn very quickly. They should have a warm sweater for winter and be kept at a comfortable temperature in the summer. Keeping in mind that they do not have hair to protect them from the elements and are basically naked. Since they have no coat, an occasional rub down with a skin moisturizer is a necessity. This dog, therefore is the ideal pet for a person suffering from dog allergies since it has no hair.

• Hereditary Disorders: The genes that cause hairlessness also result in the breed often having fewer teeth than other breeds, mostly lacking molars and premolars. Some are born with more dentition than others. Like all breeds there are some health problems. These include IBD, seizures, stroke, and skin lesions. They are very sensitive to toxins and care should be taken in use of insecticides. Insecticides are absorbed through the skin, and body fat keeps these toxins from entering the liver too quickly. Since these dogs have very low body fat, toxins are absorbed too quickly and cause severe damage to the nervous system and GI tract.

  • Small 25 – 40 cm (10 – 16 inches)
  • Medium 40 – 50 cm (16 – 20 inches)
  • Large 50 – 65 cm (20 – 26 inches)

• Living Area Requirements: The Peruvian Inca Orchids will do ok in an apartment. A fenced in yard is recommended as the Peruvian Inca Orchid is a sight-hound and may randomly take off chasing small animals at any given time. This breed should live indoors and be protected from the elements.

• Temperament: Peruvian Inca Orchid or PIOs are are calm and quiet. Intelligent and independent. This is a dog that is very devoted to their owners and does not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A well loved, confident Puruvian Inca Orchid is one that would provide constant amusement to their human family as these dogs are known to display funny antics and act as clowns. They are very gentle dogs and this is especially true with small children, but in saying this they do not appreciate rough handling. They generally get along will all other animals and people, and tend to make good family pets. As is important for all other breeds, the Puruvian Inca Orchid should be trained and socialized with people and other pets from a young age. Peruvian Inca Orchid or PIOs are not a daytime dog and prefer to be active at night, hence the nickname the Moon flower Dog. Since these dogs are considered hounds, they will pursue any fast moving object and must be walked on a leash.
