  • Breed Origin: A Cockapoo is the result of crossing a purebred American Cocker Spaniel or English Cocker Spaniel with a purebred Poodle.

  • Coat Colors: Cockapoos come in many color variations including Sable, Phantom, Roan, Parti color, Buff, Black, Chocolate, Red, Apricot, Cream and White. You can find many variations, shades and mixes of colors. Cockapoos have the potential for a very vast range of colors depending on their parental inheritance

  • Description: The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This dog is not considered a purebred, and does not “breed true”, meaning that Cockapoo puppies will not have consistently predictable characteristics. Cockapoos, may however inherit characteristics and traits of either or both parent breeds. While some Cockapoos appear more similar to Cocker Spaniels, others will exhibit with more Poodle traits, creating a wide variation in Cockapoo appearance and temperament.
    • Cockapoos have become popular because they generally combine the outgoing, loving personality of the Cocker spaniel with the low-shedding, low-dander qualities of the Poodle.
    • Cockapoos can vary in size from the smallest Poodle to the largest Cocker Spaniel.
    • With the Cockapoo you are getting the best of both worlds, acquiring the keen intelligence of the poodle and the sturdy, robust bone structure of the Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker Spaniel also contributes a laid back attitude towards life as well as considerable ‘sweetness’ as long as the breeder has chosen both parents based on temperament in addition to the important factors of looks and genetic soundness. The coat of the cockapoo tends to be wavy but not as tightly curled neither as the poodle nor absolutely straight like some Cocker Spaniels. Poodles are noted for longevity as are hybrids giving the Cockapoo a double chance of longevity, of about 15 -18 years.

  • Exercise Requirements: The Cockapoos demand for exercise is low. This dog will fare well in a small yard where it can run freely. Include a walk daily, some indoor playtime and it will be contented. In saying this, regular exercise for any breed is still considered important to maintain a healthy and happy dog.

  • Grooming: To maintain your Cockapoo’s coat in good condition requires regular brushing and care. Their coats can vary between being curly like a poodle or looser and wavier. Grooming is an essential part of owning a Cockapoo. Not only does grooming them help their condition of the coat by spreading the natural oils it also gets rid of debris, dead skin, knots and matts which can be uncomfortable for your dog. It is also an opportunity to check your dog for fleas and ticks and their general condition. Cockapoo ears and eyes need to be checked and cleaned regularly, claws need to be clipped regularly and the area between paw pads checked for foreign objects such as grass seeds.

  • Hereditary Disorders: Overall Cockapoos are generally healthy, happy dogs and as with a lot of small dog breeds, tend to have a good life expectancy. It is not unusual for cockapoos to live well past 15 years.
    • However, both purebred poodles and cocker spaniels can suffer from luxating patellas, and genetically this can be passed on to their offspring. For this reason, an OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) exam is recommended to check for this problem prior to these dogs being bred.
    • Purebred Poodles and Cocker Spaniels are also both prone to a number of eye disorders, including progressive retinal atrophy. A CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) exam and DNA test for PRA should therefore be performed prior to breeding.
    • Like other floppy eared dog breeds, Cockapoos are prone to ear infections, and it’s important to keep their ears clean and dry at all times.
