Breed Origin: Latin America - Hairless Khala’s are classified as a RARE breed of dog. The Hairless Khala has stood the test of time. This is a tough and loving little guy residing on the coastline throughout Latin America, to high in the Andes.The Hairless Khala is a Latin American breed of hairless dogs originally from Bolivia.The exact origin of the Hairless Khala Medio has not been well documented. Enthusiasts believe the breed to date back as far as the 14th century in what is modern-day South America, though this has never been proven scientifically or otherwise.They Hairless Khala is also known by other names like Chala, Kahla, Perro K’ala and Caa Allepo. They are used in Bolivia today as hunting dogs. The Khala is considered to be the largest of the Xolo breeds.

Coat Colors: white, brown, black, golden, tri-color, black and white, brown and white, black and brown

Description: The Hairless Khala comes in 2 different sizes being Khala Medio and Khala Grande. The Khala Medio has short legs while the Khala Grande has long skinny legs, resembling those of a sight hound. The Kahla is usually completely bald with the exception of a bit of a fluffy mo-hawk on the head area. The breed ranges in size from 15-30 lbs. The dark gray coloring of the Khala makes it less sensitive to the sun than it’s spotted naked counterparts.

Exercise Requirements: A fenced yard is recommended.As the Hairless Khala is in fact a hound, it has a tendency to give chase without thought. This breed will need to be taken on daily walks.

Grooming: The Hairless Khala Medio requires special care due to its lack of hair. This breed is very sensitive to cold temperatures and is prone to developing sun burn quickly. These dogs must not be kept outdoors for more than a few minutes at a time in order to prevent discomfort.

Hereditary Disorders: While the Hairless Khala Medio is typically known as a healthy and hearty breed, they do suffer from a few health problems, including: patella luxation, cancer, distichiasis or ingrown eye lashes, cryptorchidism or failure of one or both of the testicles to fully descend, and various dental issues.

Living Area Requirements: Hairless Khala are well suited to full-time indoor and apartment living.

Temperament: Hairless Khala’s are best known for its loving and friendly nature. The Hairless Khala thrives on strong and dependable relationships with humans. These dogs love to play the role of lap dog. Khala’s are very intelligent, and generally easy to train. As a pet, the Hairless Khala Medio is obedient, loyal, loving, and very affectionate. This breed adapts well to full-time indoor and apartment living, and views spending time outdoors as a rare and special treat. Due to its need for human attention, eagerness to please and impress its owner, the Hairless Khala Medio generally responds well to basic training and commands. These bright dogs have the ability to learn to perform tricks and almost any task their trainer is willing to take the time to teach, this includes using a litter box. The Hairless Khala is not the type of dog you get and forget. This dog is prone to suffer from separation anxiety. This is not the type of dog for an individual who travels frequently, has a full-time job, or are away from the home for long periods of time on a daily basis. Boredom and loneliness will bring about destructive behaviors. So if you are looking for an ultra-unique breed of dog that is a low maintenence and fun-loving, the Khala may be right for you.
