Breed Origin: The Bichon Yorkie breed of dog is a designer, hybrid breed of both Bichon Frise and Yorkshire Terrier that has increased in popularity over the last decade or so. This breed is not yet specified as a breed of its own.

Coat Colors: The coat can be found to be of any color that is common to the parent breeds, though, white or blue and tan of the Yorkshire Terrier tend to be most common. The Yorkie Bichon Mix can have the long curly or straight white hair of a Bichon Frise or the brown and black coloring of a typical Yorkshire Terrier.

Description: Bichon Yorkies are a mix between a Bichon Frise and Yorkshire terrier. Like most designer, mixed breeds, Bishon Yorkies can vary widely in both size and personality. This mixed breed are produced only when a breeder crosses a Yorkshire terrier with a Bichon Frise, and cannot be reliably bred to each other to produce Bichon Yorkies puppies. Because of this, a breed standard has not yet been determined and the looks and temperament of the dog can vary greatly from one puppy to the other. Generally, Bichon Yorkies will inherit attributes from both parents. The breed is a small in size with a compact and sturdy build that is somewhat longer than they are tall. They usually have a long tail and small ears forward towards the face. The muzzle is small and delicate like that of the Yorkshire Terrier parent. The coat of the Bichon Yorkie usually consists of a double coat with a soft, short undercoat and a silky, fluffy topcoat that is of medium length and very soft. The coat can be found in any color that is common to the parent breeds, however, white or the blue and tan of the Yorkshire Terrier are the most common.

Exercise Requirements: The Bichon Yorkie is an active breed that require 30 minutes of exercise each day. Generally, two good walks will meet their needs but it is also important to give them an opportunity for off leash exercise as well.

Food Requirements:Feed your Bichon Yorkie only top quality, organic, human-grade food that is bought in a pet store, not supermarket or discount store brands. It is imperative for Bichon Yorkie owners to provide an optimal diet that will promote healthy skin and immunity against the allergic response and diseases, considering skin allergies are the no1 problem of the Bichon Frise.

Hereditary Disorders: The Bichon Yorkie breed of dog has no known health problems as yet, however, Yorkshire Terrier puppies are prone to certain health problems when they become older. Bronchitis, eye infections, early tooth decay, herniated disks, delicate digestion and poor tolerance of anesthetic are all examples of potential health problems in a Yorkie. Similarly, Bichons are prone to watery eyes, cataracts, dislocated kneecaps, skin and ear ailments and epilepsy.

Grooming: The Bichon Yorkie breed of dog is an easy breed to care for and they only need to be brushed about once a week. The hair may need to be trimmed every month or two, especially around the face, ears and feet but in general, it can be left natural. Many owners opt to have the coat clipped and if you do, expect to clip it every 6 to 8 weeks. The Bichon Yorkie should only be bathed when he needs it and they can easily go two or three months between baths. Nails should be kept trimmed and the ears should be cleaned on a weekly basis. If the coat has a wiry texture, it is important to hand strip the coat every few months.

Hypoallergenic: Yes, Bishon Yorkies are designed not to shed. As any allergy sufferer knows, when a pet starts shedding, allergic reactions take place which make pet ownership less than enjoyable. Because Bishon Yorkies do not shed, people who have allergies can fully enjoy this breed.

Living Area Requirements: Being a small breed they are great for those who live in apartments because they don’t take up a lot of space but will do well also in a home with a yard.

Temperament: Bichon Yorkies being the offspring of two dog breeds that are widely popular for their vivacious personalities. Bichon Frise are intelligent, loving, affectionate and social dogs. Yorkies are bold, loyal adventurous and known to have quite a stubborn streak. Bichon Yorkies have a wide display of different combinations from this foundation of personality traits that are brave and bold. They are usually more than happy to go anywhere with their owners and usually enjoy being out and about. They can be surprisingly active little dogs but they are usually very easy to exercise. The Bichon Yorkie does well with other dogs and pets, however, they can often forget their size and aren’t afraid to challenge larger dogs. The breed does well with children, but they are better suited to homes with older children since they may not have much patience for younger ones.
